7 Walkway Ideas to Enhance Your Landscape

August 24, 2017    Proactive Landscaping

7-walkway-ideas-to-enhance-your-landscapeFirst impressions are always important. One of the big things that make an impact on arriving guests is your landscaping and walkway. To kick up your curb appeal a notch or three, here are some ideas to create a new pathway.

1. A Flagstone Path

Flagstone walkways have a timeless beauty and can be worked for paths of any shape. They can provide an effective counterpoint to highly geometric landscaping. Flagstone is sold by the ton. Tell your stone supplier how much area you need to cover, and they will give you the right weight of stones. A professional landscaping company, like ProActive, has the specialized tools needed to work flagstones.

2. A Stepping Stone Walkway

A stepping stone path is easy to construct and can be customized to any special design you have in mind. Decorative stones, engraved names, embossed stepping stones – the sky’s the limit. Use your imagination.

3. You Get the Picture

A fast and easy way to make a walkway where one didn’t exist before is to take a collage picture frame, place it on the ground and pour in mixed cement. Repeat this process until you have one of your neighborhood’s distinctive walkways.

4. Another Brick in the Walk

Brick walkways have a traditional country charm and the flexibility to accommodate any landscaping style. From a walkway on the straight and narrow to a meandering path, bricks are a flexible option. Plan on making the path at least three-feet wide, so two people can walk side by side.

5. Give Your Garden an Edge

To draw more attention to underperforming garden beds, consider edging them with rocks, cobblestones or flagstones. You can mix and match rock shapes to create a natural-looking edge, or use cobblestones if you are trying to create specific shapes.

6. DIY Painted Rocks

The kids will love to lend a helping paintbrush to paint rocks for one of the most colorful walkways around. Think about a specific color scheme or let your gang go rainbow wild. Glow-in the-dark paint can give your walkway real nighttime presence.

7. Loose and Easy Walkways

One of the easiest and cheapest ways to create a walkway is to use loose organic materials, such as bark nuggets, chipped wood, cypress mulch and crushed seashells. Remember that buying loose organic materials by the bag is more expensive than going to a garden center and ordering them by the square yard. The path will need to be edged (so the material isn’t washed away) and have a weed barrier.

Schedule a free estimate from ProActive Landscaping, so you can take the first steps in creating a walkway that will enhance your landscape and enjoyment of your home.
